Dogū is a work for solo saxophone by Australian saxophonist, Andrew Ball. Recorded on his debut album, Forbidden Languages, Dogū is a fast-paced work which explores false fingerings and overtones to create a unique and folk-inspired sound on the saxophone. Originally performed on soprano saxophone by it’s commissioner, Emma Di Marco, this work fits beautifully under the hands on any saxophone and is the perfect piece to open a recital or inject a little energy mid-program. Forbidden Languages is a suite for solo saxophones, comprising a body of work composed and recorded between 2015 - 2017. Each stand-alone ‘movement’ is informed by an arcane aspect of symbolism or mythology, within the broader context of language as an abstract, imaginary, irrational, ephemeral concept. The mission of this work is to push the capabilities of the performer, to blur the line between composition, improvisation and experimentation, to challenge the technical and expressive limits of the instrument, and to inspire further experimentation with the saxophone.
